Data brokers are corporations that make their money from buying and selling our personal data. What can we do to avoid being caught in their surveillance? Hannah Cyrus, Digital Media Librarian at the Bangor Public Library, will offer a 3-session workshop series covering the basics of what data brokers are and how you can opt out as much as possible. Participants will spend one session learning about data brokers and how the opt-out process works to have your data removed, and the following two sessions will be used as guided working time to submit opt-out requests and start to take back your privacy online.
Session 1: August 6 – What are data brokers? How can you get your data taken down?
Session 2: August 13 – Data broker opt-out working session
Session 3: August 20 – Data broker opt-out working session
Because of the hands-on nature of this workshop, participation will be in-person only (no Zoom option). Participants are encouraged to bring their own devices if they have them, but library computers will also be provided. Registration is for all three sessions.
