Arts & Culture

Downtown Bangor has a vibrant arts & culture community with entertainment options open all year long. The active and community-supported landscape of arts and culture is constant and provides a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere to all. From large festivals, concerts and theatre, to showcases from local artisans and musicians, there is always something to enjoy in downtown Bangor.

Arts and culture are interwoven into the fabric of downtown Bangor. For more than 150 years theaters, arts and music have been integral parts of the community. Today, there are visual artists, filmmakers, musicians, poets and writers and digital creators living and working in downtown Bangor, and performing and showing their works in a wide variety of venues.

Art Museums and Galleries

Maine’s modern and contemporary art museum, the Zillman, frequently displays contemporary works alongside works from its permanent collection, including pieces from Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Andrew Wyeth, Alex Katz and many others. Exhibits change three times per year, so there’s always something new to see.

The monthly First Friday Art Walk features local works scattered among Downtown galleries and businesses, many of which remain on display until the next Art Walk. Other celebrations of the visual arts can be seen at year-round galleries and small studios scattered throughout Downtown’s many historic buildings.
