Where Stories Begin: Shaping Family History and Historical Events into Fiction
What happens when a writer transforms family history into fiction? How do historical events become the foundation for an imagined world? And what makes a collection of linked stories feel different from—and sometimes surprisingly similar to—a traditional novel? Join author Cynthia Reeves for an engaging exploration of the ways fiction grows from both personal experience and historical research. Drawing on her novel in stories Falling Through the New World and her novel The Last Whaler, Reeves will discuss the creative choices involved in shaping lived experience into narrative, weaving history into fiction, and deciding whether a project is best served as a novel-in- stories or a traditional novel.
