SUMMARY:The Public Art of Downtown Bangor (and Why It Matters) - a Jane'
 s Walk event
DESCRIPTION:Take a walk with the Downtown Bangor Partnership as we take
in current works and consider the many ways that public art can benefit
our community.\n\n\n\nBangor is home to hundreds of years of public art
located throughout the historic downtown corridor. Bangor has maintained
its commitment to outdoor art pieces\, and in recent decades modern scu
lptures and murals have been added annually to the Downtown.\n\n\n\nIn a
ddition to beautification\, public art plays an important role in shapin
g and conveying a city’s history and identity. Modern works are often
designed to educate\, inform\, and inspire. Some beautification projects
combine public art with specific problem-solving benefits\, such as tra
ffic calming\, sound buffering\, or improved lighting. Often people donâ
€™t realize the additional benefits of public art projects and how they
happen.\n\n\n\nStarting at West Market Square\, we will work our way thr
ough the city\, across the Kenduskeag Stream\, and beside the Penobscot
River before returning to our starting point. The walk will be no more t
han 2.25 miles. It will mostly be on city sidewalks\, and will include h
ills. We may leave the path to get closer to specific items. Please wear
  appropriate footwear for a long walk\, weather-appropriate gear\, and w
ater.\n\n\n\nWe will meet by the lumber bench in West Market Square to b
egin the walk. This walk will be betterrrn 1.25- 2.25mi total and includ
es steep hills. Terrain is largely paved or brick sidewalk. Railroad tra
cks will be crossed during the walk.
