SUMMARY:Migrating Maine's Natural World Into Fiction (and Anything We Wr
 ite)
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps for too long\, writing nature has been mostly a non-
fiction pursuit. What happens when we use powerful images from our own w
oods\, waters\, and wildlife resources to enhance fiction? To develop ei
ther plot drama or respite? To craft plot twists delivered by weather or
animals? To grow a character into someone unique as well as recognizabl
e? I’ll share some of my own as well as others’ nature-text renderin
gs\, but also give participants a dry (very dry) short passage for them
to bring to life. We can share our enhanced efforts. Please bring some p
aper\, pen or pencil\, and maybe even a book title or two to recommend.\
n\n\n\nAbout Sandy in her own words:\n\n\n\n“I’ve been chased by moo
se\, river otters\, and angry partridges. My unsupervised childhood expl
oring Maine’s forests grew into a conservation career as well as my My
stery in Maine novels\, Deadly Trespass and Deadly Turn. (And the upcomi
ng Deadly Assault.) I’ve been a whitewater river outfitter\, licensed
Maine Guide\, co-founder of a coalition to protect the Penobscot River f
rom a dam\, high school English teacher and director of the Maine Conser
vation School. I’ve been a finalist for a Maine Literary Award\, the r
ecipient of a national Mystery Writers of America McCloy award\, and a n
ational finalist in the Women’s Fiction Writers Association’s “Ris
ing Star” competition. My two published murder mysteries are backstopp
ed by the real murder of the north woods ... I live on Moosehead Lake an
d am always hopeful for the loon chorus at the end of the day."\n\n\n\nT
his workshop is presented in partnership with The Stephen and Tabitha Ki
 ng Foundation.
